WHAT WE DID IN CLASS TODAY:
I modeled how to go from the analysis of a quote to writing an analytical paragraph. This is the paragraph that I showed you in class: (Let me remind you it is a work in progress. I will show you how I would revised it when we get to the revision stage of your essay.)
Bradbury shows in "The Long Rain" that the idea of home is so powerful that it can comfort people even when they are away from home. For example, as the shipwrecked crew from Earth hikes though the rains of Venus in search of a Sun Dome, outposts on Venus that offer the comforts of home to earthlings, they daydream about the amenities offered there: "warmth and quiet and hot food and freedom from rain"(81). "Hot food" evokes the images of a mother standing over a steaming pot of soup on a stove, the aroma of oatmeal cookies perfuming the air. Even if the soldiers are not eating this kind of food, the idea of it and its nurturing nourishes them. Thinking about the Sun Dome helps them deal with the unfriendly climate of Venus, by providing a psychological sustenance. In fact, one of the men even states, "I don't like this rain. If we only knew how far it is to the Sun Dome, I'd feel better"(79). The thought home is enough to make someone feel better.
I used our foldable as a guide for the components and the order of the components of an analytical paragraph.
We also discussed the analytical essay assignment. The outline will be due on Tuesday, so you may want to reread "The Rocket" and find evidence to use.
HOMEWORK: Write your own analytical paragraph using the above paragraph and the class handouts as a guide. Use the second passage we discussed from "The Long Rain" or the passage from "The Visitor" that we discussed. The paragraph should be typed and submitted to me on Monday, November 30.
