What we did in class today:
We finished our discussion of Abraxas and the cryptic note Emil received. We then discussed different kinds of knowledge and different ways of knowing. Finally, we discussed the lessons Pistorius teaches Emil.
Homework:
Answer the following questions about chapters 5 and 6, and read chapter 7 in Demian.
1. Summarize Emil's dreams in chapters 5 and 6. If you were a psychoanalyst, how might you interpret these dreams?
2. Who is Abraxas? How does Emil's discovery of this figure help him to resolve the dilemma of the two realms?
3. Why is chapter 6 entitled "Jacob Wrestling?"
4. In what ways is music similar to dreams in opening up channels of learning and discovery? Why is Emil drawn to Pistorius' playing?
5. What does Emil learn by meditating on natural objects?
6. Make a list of the Lessons of Pistorius.
