Research Topics: Native Son Unit
1. Was racism a problem for the society of Chicago, Illinois, during the 1930's? (Be sure to cite your sources clearly, and understand as you research that this question is subjective.)
2. What types of government relief programs were available to people in Chicago during the 1903's? Who was qualified to receive relief from the government? Were people interested in receiving relief from the government during this time period? Why or why not?
3. Where was the "Black Belt" in Chicago during the 1930's? Obtain a map of the area and research the conditions in which people lived in that area. (Include living conditions and services such as sanitation and building conditions.) What was life like in this area of Chicago during the 1930's?
4. What was the unemployment rate in Chicago during the 1930's? Was the unemployment rate higher for one group than for another? How do unemployment rates affect people's morale and how they behave and live in society? How did it affect people who lived in Chicago during the 1930's?
5. What political party or parties governed Chicago during the 1930's? Was there corruption in the government? Were some people treated differently than others by the government?
6. Research the Loeb and Leopold trials and the Scottsboro trials. Compare these two trials including the defendants, the situations, the prosecutors, and the society and its reactions to both of these trials.
7. Was Communism active in Chicago during the 1930's? What were the beliefs of the Communist party? What groups were active, and why were they active in Chicago?
ABRIDGED ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS:
The Assignment:
Format –
• Page length: 9 pages, not including title page, Table of Contents or Works Cited page.
• Number of genres: at least five different genres, one must be expository prose (at least 2 pages) and one must be visual.
• The paper must have a repetend (defined below).
• The paper must have 7 sources, four of which must be scholarly.
• The paper must have a title page and the title should be a significant clue about what the paper is about; there is no page number on this page.
• The paper must have a Table of Contents where genres are listed with their corresponding pages.
• The paper must have a Preface of at least 150 words that clues the reader in to what you are going to be presenting. A preface is similar to an abstract. Essentially the preface summarizes your paper briefly to allow the reader to begin reading with more clarity.
• The paper must have a Works Cited page and the sources must be cited in MLA format including in text citations.
• The paper must have page numbers in the upper right hand corner. On page one, there is a number one. On the following pages, including the Works Cited page, there is name and page number.

Pages 4-12: Multigenre project (Your first section should be exposition in which your thesis is revealed. However, this section does not have to be the entire two pages at once.)

HOMEWORK: Work on research project. The rough draft will be due Feb. 19. Also, continue reading your outside reading book.
