Basically . . .

Today we finally finished the free choice summer reading book reports. I was consistently impressed with many students' ability to maintain their poise and deliver articulate summaries and explanations of their books, though quite a few shaking quivering hands and voices betrayed extreme nervousness. I was also impressed with the overuse of the word "basically." Tomorrow we will have a funeral for the word. I am hoping we can give it a dignified eulogy.

We also began work on the next learning objective: supporting ideas and opinions with specific and accurate references to texts and real-life experiences. We began by looking over and summarizing the notes on "Bling" and the Sierra Leone PowerPoint presentation. And we began a debate on topics related to A Long Way Gone. All this is to prepare for the timed writing in class on Wednesday.
