Notes from the Testing Room

Today the students took their first timed writing. The prompts were based on the SAT writing test. Many students used their time wisely and planned their essays before writing them. I also saw quite a few taking the time to proofread their essays before they turned them in. Planning and proofreading are practices often overlooked in timed writing, but they can usually improve your essay by at least one point. Many students were nervous; that is completely natural. Hopefully, by the end of the year, they will feel more comfortable taking these kinds of tests. After all, it is on-demand writing on which all students are assessed these days - SAT, AP, CAHSEE - an alphabet's worth of acronyms - and the students should feel confident going into these tests.
