Another Beginning

After the Writer's Notebook, we began our study on grammar. My analysis of the baseline essays showed me that all students need some instruction on complete sentences, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun agreement. In order to make this study more meaningful, we are reviewing parts of speech. Today, we began with nouns - collective nouns, nouns with Latin endings that look like singular nouns when they are plural, and nouns that look like verbs - gerunds and infinitives.

We continued our word study with the following exercises:

Latin Roots Lesson 1 Exercises

HOMEWORK:
1. Complete "Discovery" questions on above handout.
2. Read the following speech and mark up for elements of voice: diction, syntax, imagery. What are some words that stick out? What does that word choice say about the speaker and her attitude toward her audience? What does the sentence structure say about the speaker? What points does she seem to emphasize with certain sentence structures? Does she use imagery to develop her point? Why is this significant?
