Today we began two new "units." We first embarked on our Latin and Greek root Odyssey. This unit is designed to equip students with the knowledge they need to make sense of unfamiliar words as they experience them in their independent reading, and also to make the specific word study that accompanies the novels we will read together easier. Here is the list of Latin prefixes, bases, and suffixes we learned today:

Not only did we learn the meanings of these roots, we also discussed words that contain these roots.
We also began our study of argument and persuasion by first talking about what Monty Python has to say about argumentation:
Then we discussed our own definitions and what makes a good argument: reasons, evidence, addressing the counterargument, emotional appeals.
The class ended with the discussion of the Persuasive Speech Assignment:

The following speech topics are off limits: 1. The legalization of any drug 2. same-sex marriage 3. gun control 4. abortion.
HOMEWORK:
1. Bring two print ads ( from magazines or newspapers) to class by Wednesday.
2. Draw the definitions for the roots learned today and add at least two words to the right box on the vocabulary notebook form.
